Faeries are unique and versatile as fantasy creatures. I was—and still am—intrigued by the different form faeries take in books. And I was excited to create my own kind of faerie.
Faeries are my favorite because:
- Faeries can range on a spectrum from light to dark, from little pesky things to human-like or even more elven in nature. I loved that I could create my own kind of faerie on this spectrum, and also that as a reader you never know what kind of faerie lies within the pages of a fantasy book.
- They are always magical. And there is so much variation in this power that leaves room for creativity.
- Faeries like to mess around with humans. I love the sense of drama this creates. Whether faeries have their own realm or they live among humans, there is always some mischief surrounding helpless humans. I love stories about changelings and humans growing up faerie and vice versa. Stories with protagonists who feel like they don’t belong are one of my favorite tropes.
- They usually have a strong connection to nature. They are magical and also more elemental than other fantasy creatures. I love weaving the beauty and power of nature into my works as well as reading about them. Faeries can bring nature alive like no other.
