The Magic of Faerie

All faeries have a force called the ara (a-rah) within them. The ara is a force within nature as well. In Faerie, the amount of power one has determines how they can influence the world around them, using the ara within to connect to the same magic within the physical world.

Each faerie is born with a varying degree of strength as well. Some have little power, and others were born with a great amount.

All faeries are born also an affinity to a certain element of nature. It is because of this that faeries must work together to meet their needs that are not met by their affinity. They infuse stones called Telk with their power and use these as currency. What magic one does not possess can be bought. Balance in society is key.

There are six different affinities: water, air, land, spirit, light, and beast.

Water: The ability to influence water, call it to them from the ground and also influence the moisture in the air. The strongest can call visions to the surface of water, messages can also be sent this way, and they can drain the moisture from the body of another.

Air: Air users are graceful, able to control the winds and use the air around them to enhance their movements or to conceal themselves from the sight of another. The strongest can pull whispers to them from nearby conversations.

Land: These faeries have the greatest connection to the world around them, able to influence the plants, communicate with trees, and to conceal themselves into the landscape.

Light: The power over heat, to warm and even to burn when needed, and to bring light into dark places.

Beast: These faeries have the power of Voice, or the ability to mind-speak with the beasts of Faerie. The most powerful can actually influence the beasts to take action.

Spirit: This is the most versatile of the affinities. Spirit users can influence spiritual energy, emotions and relationships. Abilities can range from being a simple healer to seeing visions to bringing peace to the minds of others. They are both physical and emotional healers. The strongest of which can bind oaths on faeries and influence faerie minds.

The Nameless takes place in the human world, but growing up in a society based around magic had a big influence on the faerie characters. And, of course, they can still use their magic in the human world.

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of novels coming that are actually set in Faerie as well.
