Book Review – Magic by Midnight by Allison S. Bass

(Blurb and cover taken from Goodreads)

Official blurb:

The adventure she always wanted revealed a love she could never have.

Felicity, a young librarian, is certain her only adventures will come in the form of the books she reads. When her uncle reveals that the palace librarians have the secret gift of interpreting fairy tales, stories that control the fate of the kingdom, she is thrust into a new world of magic. Between rescuing Cinderella, charming a prince, and battling an evil force trying to sabotage the fairy tale, Felicity realizes orchestrating a happily ever after ending is going to take all of her wits.

However, it’s her heart that is put to the real test. She finds herself having to choose between her own happy ending or protecting the fairy tale she’s been tasked with completing. After the clock strikes midnight, Felicity discovers her world will change forever and some fates are stronger than magic.

My rating: Four stars out of five.

By far the coolest thing about this book was the librarian aspect of it. As a book nerd, I loved the idea that the prince’s destiny was written in a book that only Felicity could read. And that meant she was in charge of making sure it came true.

So, this is no ordinary fairytale. And that’s what I loved about it! There are monsters and unexpected twists as well as swords, fairies, and magic—three of my favorite things.

It gets a little dark, but in a very good way.

I like the banter between Felicity and Alexander and also the realness of it. Felicity herself as a character is pretty awesome as well. She’s strong and independent, and pretty stubborn. She is flawed and real.

I will say I was a little disappointed by the end, and that’s why I had to give it four stars. But I will not say why because it would be a total spoiler. You will just have to read it and decide for yourself!
