Official blurb:
Whistling Tor is a place of secrets, a mysterious, wooded hill housing the crumbling fortress of a chieftain whose name is spoken throughout the district in tones of revulsion and bitterness. A curse lies over Anluan’s family and his people; those woods hold a perilous force whose every whisper threatens doom.
For young scribe Caitrin it is a safe haven. This place where nobody else is prepared to go seems exactly what she needs, for Caitrin is fleeing her own demons. As Caitrin comes to know Anluan and his home in more depth she realizes that it is only through her love and determination that the curse can be broken and Anluan and his people set free.
My rating: five out of five stars
Switching it up a little for Halloween. I polled Instagram for ghostly book recs, and this one popped up.
Jane Eyre plus dark magic and ghosts. That’s all you would’ve had to say to get me to read this book. It also gave me Beauty and the Beast vibes. But I was also pleasantly surprised in many ways.
I love Caitrin as the main character. She has been abused, but she is still able to show such kindness. And her personal journey to gaining confidence and overcoming fear (both of other humans and ghosts) is remarkable. The romance between her and the mysterious Anluan of Whistling Tor is so real and sometimes frustrating, but I had to keep turning the page to find out more. Anluan is the typical broody male character that needs saving but with a twist (literally).
This is the perfect book for those who enjoy historical romance with fantasy elements and an awesome Halloween read for those who aren’t really into gore but need a little spooky in their lives.
