Book Review – Fortuna Sworn by K.J. Sutton

(Cover and blurb taken from Goodreads)

Official blurb:

We were meant to be seductive. We were designed to lure humans in.

Fortuna Sworn is the last of her kind.

Her brother disappeared two years ago, leaving her with no family or species to speak of. She hides among humans, spending her days working at a bar and her nights searching for him. The bleak pattern goes on and on… until she catches the eye of a powerful faerie.

He makes no attempt to hide that he desires Fortuna. And in exchange for her, he offers something irresistible. So Fortuna reluctantly leaves her safe existence behind to step back into a world of creatures and power.

It soon becomes clear that she may not have bargained with her heart, but her very life.

TRIGGER WARNING: This novel contains scenes or themes of sexual harassment, toxic relationships, and slavery.

My rating: four stars out of five

I went into this one thinking it was going to be one thing (more of the typical fae fantasy she is tricked into a bargain by a fae and has to escape)—and then it was a very different thing!

Fortuna’s nightmare powers are super unique and enjoyable. Seeing her tenacity, loyalty to her brother, and crafty thinking around the fae kept me turning the pages. She was pretty morally gray; she kind of reminded me of Jude from The Cruel Prince, which is a good thing.

Collith was what I was expecting, a confident, aloof fae male that had layers once you dug down. In that way, he was kind of a disappointment. But it didn’t keep me from reading on to see whether or not they ended up together. And I liked him better once the story went on and his true motivations were revealed.

The other fae characters are very intriguing. You will constantly wonder what sort of game all of them are playing. Plus, there’s a guy in Fortuna’s dreams.

And the twist at the very end….!

It all makes for quite the exciting read!

There’s some mild steam in scenes, and mild gore, so be warned.

This is a series, so read this one and continue on!
